Green Jobs in District Heights -

The City's new green program will help in providing new "green jobs" in both the City and Prince George's County. Our new leader, President Barack Obama , in March, announced more than $20 billion for investment in a cleaner, greener economy, including $500 million for green job training. This investment will help build jobs for the middle class. Promoting green jobs in District Heights will only help to build the local economy, but also help residents save money on their energy bills, as well as help to decrease the gas emissions in the environment.

What is a "Green collar" Job?

A "green-collar" job is in essence a blue-collar job that has been upgraded to address the environmental challenges of our country," said Lucy Blake, chief executive of the Apollo Alliance (New York Times, March 2008)

District Heights is looking for local Plumbers, Electricians and general MHIC contractors who will provide "green" home improvement upgrades. We are also looking to build working relationships with Local Weatherization Agencies (LWA) and CNOs. Please contact Samantha Archibald, archibalds@districtheights.org or Shantay Dabney, dabneys@districtheights.org and 301-336-1402

Facade and Infrastructure Improvement Project completed in the 6300 Block of Marlboro Pike

Before

After

Yes, it's finally completed! What started in October 2008 has finally come to an end. The city partnered with the 13 property owners of the 6300 Block of Marlboro Pike to conduct facade and infrastructure improvements. The project consisted of a new storefront, uniform exterior treatment, new paint, awnings, commercial signage, trash receptacles, parking lot improvements, concrete dumpster pads (rear of building), security grills, exterior lighting, security lighting, and a complete electrical panel/utility upgrade. By revitalizing the 6300 Block, the city's plans are to restore the true identity of the community and to provide a better quality of life for its residents. Revitalization of the 6300 Block will also help to stimulate business activity in the 6300 Block, as well as the rest of the commercial corridor. We hope that it will also help to stimulate additional property investments in the commercial corridor.

The city would like to thank the state of Maryland's Community Legacy Program, Prince George's County - Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, HUD special Projects - Economic Development Initiative (EDI), the State of Maryland Bond Bill Appropriations administration; the contractors and consultants - John L. Mattingly Construction Co. and Arel Architects, Inc.; Prince George's County Permit Office, M-NCPPC, Washington Gas, and Pepco for being an integral part in the project. Also many thanks to the business owners, property owners, and customers, for your patience and cooperation. Thank you and remember that is our community; we have to support our businesses --- our local economy, which is critical to becoming a prosperous city

City of District Heights' Commercial Revitalization Efforts Underway

The city's commercial corridor has undergone a major transformation over the past 50 years.  The commercial area provides valuable goods and services to the community. Unfortunately, similar to other development along the Marlboro Pike corridor, the city's commercial area experienced a downturn in its physical aesthetics and infrastructure. The dilapidated site conditions, mismatch building facades, and lack of investment (in some areas) portrays a negative perception of [city of] District Heights.  With the recent commercial annexation in 2006 of the 6000 to the 6200 Block of Marlboro Pike, the city is working towards creating a safe and vibrant downtown area for its residents and surrounding community to enjoy.  After years of planning and design, the city started their commercial revitalization efforts in 2008. The city of District Heights partnered with property and business owners in the 6300 Block in undergoing a $1.2 million renovation project. The city successfully utilized grant funding from a variety of funding sources to support their commercial revitalization efforts. Upon completion the 6300 Block revitalization project, there will exist, a completely new storefront, which will include the strip mall development, Tasty Crème's, and the CITGO Gas Station. The parking lot was also redone in late 2008 as part of the site renovations. By revitalizing the 6300 Block the city's plans are to restore the true identity of the community and to provide a better quality of life for its residents. Revitalization of the 6300 block will also help to stimulate business activity in the 6300 Block, as well as the entire commercial corridor, and hopefully, help to stimulate additional property investments in the commercial area.

The city was awarded additional funds from Prince George's County's, Community Development Block Grant Program for Fiscal year 2009-2010 to continue façade and infrastructure improvements in the rest of the corridor. Matching grants will be available to property and business owners to make exterior improvements to their property. Businesses will be contacted; and marketing and planning for Phase II has begun, and will continue into the fall and winter of 2009. The city's commercial revitalization efforts represent the start of building strong relationships with our business community.

More information about the city's revitalization efforts can be obtained by contacting, Samantha Archibald, the city's Urban Planner, who is the program manager of the city's commercial revitalization program, at archibalds@districtheights.org or going to www.districtheights.org/communityrevitalization.cfm.
