Family Services Center

"It Takes A Whole Village To Raise A Child."

Overview of Funding

The District Heights Family & Youth Services Center is pleased to work in accordance with a diverse group of funders. With there support, we will continue to ensure effective, community-based programs for our citizens and the communities in which they reside.

Youth Service Bureau's are a state and local partnership, with funding provided by the City of District Heights and the
State of Maryland's Governor's Office of Children. The state funding is facilitated and monitored by the Prince George's County Department of Family Services, Administration for Children, Youth and Families, also known as the Local Management Board (LMB).

The Strengthening Families program is jointly funded by County Executive Jack Johnson's Livable Communities Initiative and Councilman Samuel Dean's discretionary funds, while the Visionary Youth project is funded by Prince George's County Housing and Community Development Department through the Community Development Block Grant program.

The State of Maryland's Department of Juvenile Services provided one-half of the funding for our trailer procurement project, in partnership with the City of District Heights.

Community Advocates for Family and Youth
(CAFY) has a mission to “educate, empower, and embrace victims as they speak the truth on their journey to justice” by assisting youth, ages 5 through 21, through advocacy, outreach education and restoration services.  Since its inception, in 2003, the agency’s foundation has been based on the following core beliefs

  • Early interaction and outreach to teenage victims, witnesses, and their families encourages action and meets an immediate need.

  • Crime must be viewed as a public health issue and should be dealt with by giving our youth a voice.

  • Continued support to victims ecourages our youth to speak out about their victimization and hold those in the wrong accountable.

CAFY exists to act as a “ConstantLink” to victims of crime, including services such as the Court Education Programs, Teens against Assault, Violence & Abuse (TAVA) and the Family Dialogue Sessions. CAFY is the only agency in the state of Maryland to offer Court Education to help prepare victims to be “effective witnesses in a court of law; it is also one of 32 agencies across the nation selected to develop and implement a statewide teen focused, teen facilitated victimization and awareness campaign.

Organizational Overview Organized in 1973, as an adjunct to the Congressional Black Caucus, the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. is dedicated to serving the community through education and training on important healthcare and social issues.

As one of 15 national chapters, the Southern Maryland Chapter works with the community to mitigate the effects of domestic violence on families by helping women of all ages to become financially literate and educate women about healthcare issues that disproportionately affect them. The Chapter also works directly with other organizations to develop and implement programs to help meet the needs of young people.

In conjunction with Teens Count and Planned Parenthood Washington, the Southern Maryland Chapter has developed outreach programs, organized conferences, and conducted workshops for teens needing conflict resolution, esteem building, goal setting and self mentoring. The Southern Maryland Chapter works closely with school systems in Prince Georges County, Montgomery County and the District of Columbia in the development of its annual scholarship program to empower area youth to pursue their college education.
