Services Provided:

The City Manager provides direction and leadership for the effective administration and operations of all municipal services for the City of District Heights. As directed by the City Commission, Tamil serves as the focal point for the management of the city's departments. The City Manager's Office also prepares and submits to the City Commission, a balanced plan of municipal services in adherence with the policy, goals, and objectives established by the Commission, while employing the managerial techniques needed to assure efficient and effective utilization of the City's resources. 
 

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

• Attended Bethune-Cookman College where Tamil earned a bachelor's degree in Mass Communications-Broadcast Journalism with cum laude honors. While attending Bethune-Cookman, Tamil became a Black Women in Sisterhood for Action (BISA) scholar.

• Worked for the City of Falls Church, Virginia as a communications associate where she was responsible for media relations and community outreach, and assisting the City Manager's office.

• Later went on to work as a media relations assistant at Fingerhut, Powers, Smith and Associates, a full service communications firm in Washington, DC.

• After only one year at Webster University, she earned a master's degree in Marketing.

• Tamil became a contractor for Volunteers of America, where she was responsible for writing a customized technical manual for the organizations donor database software.

• In 2002 she returned to her roots of public service and became the first African-American to be appointed as the City Clerk of the City of District Heights, Maryland.

• Due to her diligence and commitment to public service, in June 2006, she was promoted and appointed as the City Manager-Clerk.

• Tamil is currently on track to complete course work for the Doctor of Education degree with a concentration in Organizational Leadership and a minor in Human Service Administration, in December 2007 at Nova Southeastern University.

• She serves on several boards and committees including: Cover, Inc., a DC based non-profit organization that provides shelter and support for teenagers who are living with HIV/AIDS; and Black Women In Sisterhood for Action, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to develop and promote alternative strategies for educational and career development of black women.

• Tamil is also an active member of Victory Christian Ministries International, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, the National Council of Negro Women, Order of the Eastern Star, and Maryland Municipal Clerks Association. She recently completed her certification course work for the University of Maryland's Academy for Excellence in Local Government.

• Tamil has been successful at acquiring and managing several grants for the City.

• She has been successful at implementing transformational and servant leadership styles and is constantly researching new ways to help ensure that the workforce is productive and meeting the needs of the community.

• In September 2007, Tamil graduated from the University of Maryland's Academy for Excellence in Governmental Service.
