Commercial Revitalization Program 

 

Project Summary

The City of District Heights' vision for its District Heights Commercial Revitalization program, through the implementation of façade restoration and infrastructure improvements, is to create a uniform, visually pleasing, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere, that reflects the true identity of the business and residential community; and which fosters economic prosperity. 

The District Heights Commercial Revitalization Program is necessary in order to remove blight in our commercial area, which has a direct affect on the business retention and creation trends within the City of District Heights" Commercial Business District (CBD); as well as negative effects on our residential community.

The District Heights Commercial Revitalization Program which was developed to increase Prince George’s County emphasis on revitalization efforts throughout older communities in the County, and to create a more strategic focus on these efforts through capital improvement projects and revitalization initiatives in the City.

This program will incorporate various programs of:

  • Streetscape
  • Façade and Infrastructure improvements
  • Business Conservation and Development

Current Commercial Revitalization Initiatives

Measurable Goals/Outcomes

The City has established several measurable goals/outcomes through the implementation of District Heights Commercial Revitalization Program as it pertains to façade restoration and infrastructure improvements. They are as follows:

  • Develop job creation and retention for employees of businesses in the CBD;
  • Increase economic activity and promote business retention and growth;
  • Eliminate physical blight and deterioration of the Commercial Business District;
  • Establish Design Standards and guidelines that improve the overall visual quality of the commercial corridor and creates a uniform/consistent look while allowing some flexibility for individual property owners;
  • Enhance pedestrian environment and safety while providing streetscape amenities that are durable, vandal resistant, low maintenance and cost effective;
  • Improve the existing parking conditions by maximizing the existing parking capacity and developing additional parking alternatives.
