Commissioner Willie Calhoun, along with his wife, Sharon, and son, Blake, have lived in the City of District Heights for the past 13 years. Prior to moving to District Heights, they lived in Forestville for 8 years and has lived in Prince's George's County since 1973. He is committed to the growth of the City of District Heights as an integral part of Prince George's County. Prior to being appointed as Commissioner for Ward I, and being elected in May, 2000 as Commissioner for Ward I, he was very involved with numerous community activities and continues to be involved in those activities. He is a current member of the District Heights Community Development Corporation and the Citizen Action Patrol.
Commissioner Calhoun is actively involved with several committees which includes the National League of Cities Committee where he is a member of the Public Safety and Crime sub-committee, and the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO).
Commissioner Calhoun recently retired from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as a Senior Claims Examiner. He had been with FEMA for nearly 30 years. His expertise gained at FEMA has been useful in supporting the safety concerns of the City of District Heights.
Commissioner Calhoun's priority agenda includes upgrading street lights and street signs, tree limb collection, expedient snow removal, and an Emergency Preparedness Plan for the City. City rejuvenation efforts and economic development are a priority as well. Planting trees, flowers, encouraging residents to maintain properties and the upgrade of the Municipal center gymnasium and parking lot are prior initiatives that he has been involved with.
As a City Commissioner and resident of this City, Commissioner Calhoun wants to be instrumental in making the City a better place to live.
