Community Development Programs Internship Opportunity
The City of District Heights is looking for an Intern to fill a temporary, semester-long position. The Intern will receive valuable on-the-job professional work experience and training. This is a part-time position that will require up to 20 hours per week and will be compensated at $10/hr. This position can be utilized to satisfy an Internship requirement or outside real-life working experience for a college student or recent graduate.
Intern will work directly under Department supervisor. The Intern will be required to work collaboratively with the Urban Planner and Program assistant to successfully manage and complete program duties.
Basic Internship requirements:
· Educational/Technical Skills (Required):
o Must be currently attending any accredited 2 or 4 year educational institution or have recently graduated within the past year ( must provide copy of transcript, verifying you are currently enrolled and/or have met graduation requirements)
o Master Degree students and/or recent graduates, highly preferred
o Must have a 2.5 GPA and above for undergraduates; and 3.0 for Master Degree candidates/recent graduates
o Must have strong technical writing (i.e. reports, memos) and computer background
o Must have strong knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Experience working with Microsoft Publisher is a plus
o Must be able to learn website editor program, which allows you to update and alter program-related website content.
· Other Internet/Computer software skills (highly desired, but not required)
o Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and/or Illustrator
o Facebook savvy
· Office Skills
o Ability to assist with answering phones and Communicate with the public
o Operate office equipment ( i.e. scanner, copier, postage machine)
· Communication Skills
o Strong Presentation skills
o Great Interpersonal Skills (i.e. communicating with program participants)
o Strong ability to learn and adapt to change
o Great Team Player
o Strong Capability to work Independently, but be able to accept positive/effective criticism
o Great Leaderships skills and problem solving/analytical skills
· Other Desirables
o Must be willing to perform a background check
o Possess a valid Drivers License
o Possession of personal transportation vehicle is a plus, but not required
Core Duties:
1. Grant Management
a. Responsible for completing and submitting program progress reports, according to reporting deadlines and other reporting requests for all grants, to all respective grant agencies
b. Responsible for managing/maintaining program budgets and other requirements
2. Program Management
a. Responsible for tracking program activities, to make sure activities are performed on time
b. Responsible to answer questions and communicate information related to each program (working collaboratively with program assistant)
c. Responsible for being the contact person with program partners (i.e. contractors, residents, partners etc…)
d. Create and submit monthly progress reports to Mayor and Commission for all grants/programs
e. Responsible for working with program assistant to promote each program, by developing marketing materials (i.e. brochures, flyers, newsletters, news articles) and events ( i.e. Information Sessions) for each program
f. Coordinate program meetings (i.e. progress meeting, stakeholder meetings), as needed
g. Seek guidance and work collaboratively with Urban Planner in handling financial, procurement and contractor activities
3. Core Project Initiatives:
a. Marlboro Pike Commercial Revitalization Program -Façade and Infrastructure Improvement Program
b. District Heights Energy Efficiency Program (DHEEP)
c. City Beautiful Program
