The City of District Heights is promoting “Energy Efficiency & Green Jobs”
District Heights, Maryland – The City of District Heights launched their Green Initiative on Thursday evening, February 26, 2009 by hosting a Green Workshop called “Green Homes for Non-Millionaires” which was held for the local residents at the City’s Municipal Center. District Heights partnered with the local non-profit group, Community Forklift, owned by Jim Schulman, AIA, which sells new, surplus, reused building materials to the public. Community Forklift has worked with other communities in Prince George’s communities on green initiatives and is also a partner is working with green firms and other non-profits in promoting “green jobs.” Experts talked about “low-cost, no-cost ways” to make your home more energy efficient, as well as gave tips on water conservation. The meeting started promptly at 6:00pm, which started out with food and refreshments. Mayor James Walls of District Heights opened the workshop. Mayor Walls said that this green workshop was the beginning of the city’s efforts to “going green” and is excited about joining other cities and counties, both locally and nationally, in developing initiatives to protect the environment. Expert presentations, by Jan Townshend from Neighborhood Design Center, a non-profit organization, which is a multidisciplinary design group who provide low-cost/voluntary design services to Prince George County M-NCPPC, and other cities and municipalities in the county. Ms Townshend gave substantial and very informative information to the residents about energy efficient home improvement tips. Ms Ruthie Mundell, Outreach Director, with Community Forklift also gave a presentation on energy saving tips. Representatives from Pepco and WSSC also gave short presentations and gave away things like, energy saving light bulbs, “can the grease” covers, and informational brochures. |
