The Citizen’s Action Patrol (CAP) created a program called “House of the Month” to award those District Heights residents who maintain their property in excellent condition. Also, it is a way to encourage others to follow suit. We created a three-member committee to canvas the city and select one home for the monthly award. We established certain policies for the committee: (1) observe from the outer perimeter only – do not enter the property, (2) the condition of both the house and the yard are evaluated, (3) contact the resident once the selection is made and obtain approval for CAP to post the address in the Herald and place a sign in the yard indicating their residence is the selected home. We commissioned Mr. Brooks, co-coordinator of the community garden and a graphic design artist, to design and construct the sign. The sign is removed by CAP at the end of the month and placed in the yard of the next awardee.
