Speed Enforcement

Automated speed enforcement systems are deployed at select residential areas and school zones throughout the City of District Heights and complement the existing speed enforcement efforts of the District Heights Police Department.  Specifically, school zones must be within the municipality limits of the City of District Heights with speed limits of less than 45 mph.

Automated speed enforcement systems are comprised of a speed measurement device, a camera, and a computer.  Speed measuring devices identify motorists traveling 12 mph or more over the posted speed limit.  Speed cameras capture vehicle and license plate images of violations, and computers record all of the relevant data associated with the violation.

When a speed violation occurs, the automated speed enforcement equipment records the date, the time and the speed of the vehicle.

A citation that includes images of the violating vehicle is then mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. Once the violator receives the citation, payment, request for appeal, or written correspondence can be mailed to:

Operates 24 hours a day, Monday - Sunday (regardless of when school is in session).

  • Silver Hill Road and Scott Key Drive (District Heights Elementary School)

Violators:

  • Cameras are triggered for vehicles exceeding the speed limit by 12 or more mph.
  • Civil citations shall carry a fine of $40.
  • The fee shall double if a citation has not been paid within 30 days.
  • If not paid within 60 days, the fee shall double again for each speed and red-light violation.
  • If not paid within 90 days, it shall be forwarded to Municipal Collections of America. A collection fee of $40.00 shall be assessed for each violation.
  • Citations will be mailed to the vehicle owner.
  • During the first two weeks of operation at these new locations, warnings will be issued to violators.  After September 14, 2016, violators will be issued citations.

Towing Process

The City of District Heights has a contract with J & L Towing, McDonald's Towing, and Ryon's Towing to remove:

  • Recovered Stolen Vehicles
  • Traffic Impoundments
  • Evidence Impoundments
  • Safekeeping

Anyone who has had their vehicle impounded for any reason must first report to the City of District Heights Municipal Center located at 2000 Marbury Drive, District Heights, MD, to retrieve a vehicle release form. They must have a Vehicle Release form, signed by a District Heights representative, in order to retrieve their vehicle from one of our contracted towing companies. 

  • J & L Towing is located at 8225 Grey Eagle Drive, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772.
  • McDonald's Towing is located at 2917 52nd Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20781.
  • Ryon's Towing is located at 8490 Burton Lane, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772.

Owners of impounded vehicles may report to the District Heights Municipal Center, Monday-Friday, from 9:00 am -5:00 pm, to get a Vehicle Release.  The fee associated with the Vehicle Release is $75.00.

Owners of impounded vehicles must bring their picture identification and the vehicle registration/title to the District Heights Municipal Center, identifying them as the owner/co-owner/lien holder of record.


Motor Vehicle Accident Report

District Heights residents in need of accident reports may visit the District Heights Municipal Center at 2000 Marbury Drive, District Heights, MD 20747. The City maintains copies of accident reports taken in the City. For all other reports outside of the city, please contact any Prince George's County Police Department.

A fee of $10.00 will be assessed. Payment may be made via credit/debit card, business check, money order, and/or cashier's check.
