The District Heights Police Department is committed to prevent crime through education, awareness, and partnership with the community. Many crimes—including burglary, theft from auto, and fraud—are preventable when residents and businesses take simple, proactive steps to reduce opportunities for criminal activity.

Burglary Prevention

• Always lock doors and windows, even when home or stepping out briefly.
• Use exterior lighting, motion sensors, and security cameras when possible.
• Do not advertise absences on social media; wait until you return home.
• Secure garages, sheds, and basements, and keep valuables out of plain view.
• Report suspicious activity immediately early reporting helps prevent crimes.

Theft from Auto Prevention

• Lock your vehicle every time, no matter how short the stop.
• Remove all valuables from your vehicle or store them out of sight.
• Never leave firearms, wallets, electronics, or keys inside unattended vehicles.
• Park in well-lit, high-visibility areas whenever possible.
• Report thefts promptly, even if no damage is visible.

Fraud Prevention

• Be cautious of unsolicited phone calls, emails, texts, or social media messages requesting money or personal information.
• Government agencies, banks, and legitimate businesses do not demand immediate payment by gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
• Do not click on unknown links or download attachments from unfamiliar sources.
• Verify requests for money—even from known contacts—before sending funds.
• Monitor financial accounts regularly and report suspicious activity immediately.
